Who is the chief audit executive, and what are their principal responsibilities?
This article presents perspectives on the head of the internal audit function in companies.
The chief audit executive, or head of internal audit, is a senior-level individual responsible for leading the internal audit function. Under the Institute of Internal Auditors' Global Internal Audit Standards, their responsibilities include strategic planning, obtaining and allocating resources, building relationships and communicating with stakeholders, and managing and improving the performance of the function.
For example, at the beginning of the year the chief audit executive develops a strategic plan setting out the areas the internal audit function will review, and allocates the budget and staff required for it. They monitor internal audit operations on an ongoing basis to gain assurance that the methodologies and resources in place are serving the achievement of the objectives.
